Ellen G. White

Ellen G. WhiteEllen G. White (1827-1915) participated in the Advent revival as a young lady, and went on to become a founding pioneer in the Seventh-day Adventist church.

God called her to write and speak His message: a message that was to open up the neglected truths of the Bible, particularly those truths needed to prepare believers to meet their Lord at His return.

Her books are full of the riches of Christian truth. For example, her book on the life of Christ, The Desire of Ages, is unequalled in it’s spiritual depth, intellectual clarity, and beauty of language. But just as it was in Jesus’ time, so it is today—very few recognize the Shepherd’s voice through His chosen agents.

Isaiah 53
1 Who has believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

Some of Ellen White’s writings are so beautifully phrased that they are almost poetry, and lend themselves very readily to music. See examples here: Practica Poetica – Texts from Ellen White.

Since her writings are widely available on many websites and via Apps for computers and mobile devices, I will not attempt to reproduce all the material here (in any case, my life would be too short to accomplish it!). Instead, I will offer here a few collections of periodical articles that are unique and which have not been widely published in book/booklet form.

Lessons from the Life of Daniel

Lessons from the Life of DanielThis series of articles was published by Ellen White in the Youth’s Instructor from 1903 to 1907. Much of the material was not reproduced in other books.

Because the prophecies of the book of Daniel are unsealed in Revelation 10, and are the key to understanding most of the prophecies from Revelation 11 onward, Adventists tended to dwell on the prophetic aspect of the book of Daniel.

But the moral aspect is equally as important. Daniel and his companions stand as examples of what the last generation must be in temperance, devotion, and whole-hearted service. These are the lessons that are dwelt upon in this publication.

Daniel and his friends resisted the luxurious diet of their time; so we must resist the intemperance in eating and drinking of our modern age. Daniel’s companions refused to bow to the false image of Nebuchadnezzar; so we must refuse to bow to the image of the beast, soon to be erected in our day. Daniel never let false education undermine his confidence in God’s word, and no matter what his attainments, never lost sight of his utter dependence upon God. His life stands as an example and type of those who will live to see Christ return again. 102p

Lessons from the Life of Solomon

Lessons from the Life of SolomonThis series of articles was published by Ellen White in the Review and Herald from 1905 to 1906. Some of the material was later used in the book Prophets and Kings, but not all of it.

These articles present a wider application of the lessons from Solomon’s life, with especial application to the church and the gospel work to be done before Christ’s return.

There is no time in Old Testament history, when the purpose of God, that His people should reach the world with His gospel, was closer to fulfillment than Solomon’s day. It was a glorious opportunity, which however was sadly sidetracked.

Such an opportunity would not appear again until One “greater than Solomon” (Matthew 12:42) would appear on Earth.

God’s purpose has not changed. It still remains for the church to complete the work that Jesus began, to…

Isaiah 27
6 …blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.

Matthew 24
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Revelation 18
1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

Therefore, the lessons from Solomon’s time, both what was done right, and what was done wrong, remain as guides and warnings to us today. This is especially so, since the same sad falling away, for the same reasons, led the once-pure early Church to depart from the faith, and become the tyrannical Papal system.

Satan’s methods have not changed since the temptation in the garden, and it is essential that every one who desires to overcome as Christ overcame, be fully aware and awake to those temptations, and to the Lord’s remedies.

Every Christian who desires to be successful in co-working with God, and to redeem the failures of the past, needs to understand and practice the spiritual truths revealed in the history contained in this book.

Martin Luther: A Character Sketch

Martin Luther: A Character SketchMartin Luther, the German reformer, was the man God used to bring spiritual deliverance to His people from bondage to the anti-Christian Catholic system that dominated Europe during the Middle Ages.

Here are a series of articles from the pen of Ellen White, that briefly cover the history of Luther, from his childhood to the triumphs of the Reformation, when the word of God was translated into the language of the common people, and was eagerly studied and lived among them.

There are details and lessons brought out in these articles which are not included in the more widely circulated volume, The Great Controversy. Therefore, I have presented these articles in book form, for the benefit of all modern day “reformers” who want to walk in the path that God so clearly marked out in those early days. 176p

Nehemiah: The Spirit of True Reform

Nehemiah: The Spirit of True ReformA large part of these articles were used in the book Prophets and Kings, among the chapters that relate to Nehemiah and the work of building Jerusalem. However, there are paragraphs here and there that were omitted due to their particular application to the church, and some of the sentences were reworked.

These original articles were divided into more sections, thus making for smaller chapters. This makes them more readily accessible for family reading.

I have made an addition to the text by adding in relevant Bible verses, where they were referred to by Ellen White, but were not directly quoted. No doubt she was restrained by the need to keep periodical articles relatively short. Hopefully this will make it a bit more complete.

These articles provide a nice, succinct account of the reform accomplished by Nehemiah, and the lessons it has for us today. 90p

Steps to Christ

Steps to ChristThis wonderful little book, by the inspired pen of Ellen G. White, explains the Gospel of personal salvation in a very simple and thorough way.

In this edition, I’ve used the authorized text of the 1892-93 edition, but I’ve introduced the formatting rules I use on all our books, to make the Bible texts and other quotes stand out, and thus introduce more space and order on the page. This also makes it easier to gather the texts quoted, for further study or memorization.

I’ve also used many of the pictures from the 1921 printing, as well as some of the poems from that edition. Most of the printer’s ornaments come from various foreign translations of Steps to Christ.

There is an Appendix chapter at the end, which contains a sermon given by A. T. Jones in 1893. About half-way through this sermon, he compares the teaching of Steps to Christ, with the Catholic idea of justification, to show how different they are.

And at the very back of this publication, there is a section of Songs, written by members of our church, on some of the Bible texts used in this book. 183p
